Seoul Lotus Lantern Festival 2015

With a bunch of new friends at Lotus Lantern Festival 2015! Thank you KTO for the opportunities!

Jogyesa Temple, near Jonggak Station which is situated in front of my intern office.
On 16 May, KTO invited a number of foreigners to join the Lotus Lantern Festival. The programme started at 3pm by making of our own lantern.

Making my own lantern surely gave me a great new experience.

My new Indonesian friend, Fairuz.

After making the lantern, we were provided with vegetarian food consist of vegetable kimbab and fruits.

We need to wait for everybody whose participate to assemble so we were allowed to walk around the temple. It is unique because we can see lots of peoples with their own costumes. Those who were not registered also were provided with free lanterns by the Jogyesa temple for the parade.

Play role as the Queen and the King

I have no idea what is this costume.

Our E-group which consist of Malaysian (Me), two Indonesian, three American Vietnamese, one Dutch girl and a Bangladeshi couple with their cute son. This picture taken few minutes before the parade started.

With our kind KTO staff during the parade.

Wet Market Near Anam

Hanun brought me to the nearest wet market around Anam after I asked her about it. We went here with her scooter since it's quite far from our place. If you need to stay in Korea for quite a long time and have a tight budget then cook your own food is one of the best option. My tips is to go to the local wet market rather than the supermarket because it is fresher here and the price will be cheaper depends on what you buy. However with my small fridge, I think its not that convenience since I need to buy a bulk of everything.

Seoul Friendship Fair

Since I need to start making friends here and started to crave for some meat I've decided to go to this festival. I came across to this event from Adilla, a student from Korea University that I've met while shopping in Daiso around Anam. Saw her with her headscarf I'm happily introduced myself to her. Add her in facebook and she then provide me with the details which is in Hangul. Yeah I did know a bit of it but I'm not an expert!  So I searched for the website with an English poster and went here with Hanun and Bazli.

Seoul Friendship Festival

This festival had been held every year since 1996. Marking its 19th anniversary it managed to invite over 60 countries to join this year. This event not only introduce the culture of each countries but also provide booths for NGOs that advocates aid for underdeveloped countries like Africa and some Southeast Asia countries like Cambodia.

Doing my masters in ASEAN studies made me learnt about many countries which made this visit become more interesting at certain way. Learning European Union introduced me with lines of European countries and African countries where at least I've heard their names before. Of course we need to have more information about Southeast Asia countries so I have a different view when I looked at Philippines booth and Indonesian booth. Then the so called bad Russia and sneaky China together with Turkey, the Middle East countries, India, Pakistan and more.  Even Ukraine have its own booth which surprised me.

Sate, teh tarik and Chicken Tandoori

Malaysia's Booth

Most of the embassies have two type of booth one is for the culture which it provide with information of the countries, traditional costumes, traditional game and traditional music. Another one is the food stall where it offered few types of food from the origin countries. This is where the fun started and my own main target.

This Sate is not as good as Kajang. Still, I'm grateful for the meat.

I should have bought the cheaper one that gave more chicken than this. My tips is to go around and survey the food first.

The show of the day, our popular teh tarik which attract crowds to the stall.
 Performances

At 4pm some countries joined the parade and showed few minutes of cultural performances. It is interesting to watch many type of dances, traditional instruments and performances from many countries. If you're at Seoul during May, I did think coming to this kind of festival might be a very good option.

Goyang Flower Festival

Went to Goyang on my last trip to Seoul totally a disappointment. A friend of mine told me that they usually hold a flower festival every year. It was early April and not a single flower was seen there. Therefore, I vow to myself to come on the right time when the flowers blooming. 2015 marked my accomplishment so here I am at the festival.

Goyang Lake Park

Goyang means 'shaking'. In Malay I mean. I do not know what does its mean in Korean. haha..

Situated directly in front of MBC buildings, this Lake Park was famous with lots of drama being shoot here such as 'To the Beautiful You' featured by Choi Min Ho from Shinee and many other famous drama which I can't remember since I didn't watch them.

It is a beautiful place for picnic especially during Spring.

Flower Festival

You need to pay for ticket to get in. Adults need to pay 10,000 KRW for it. As KTO did gave away discounts coupons for foreigners, I paid only 7,000 KRW for the it. So keep yourself updated with KTO websites before coming.

The Ajummas

I was blessed to meet few ajummas and ajussi who asked me about my nationality and later invited me to join them for lunch. We chose to eat in front of the lake under the tables. She gave me rice that contains some nuts and offered me varieties of kimchi. They brought together with them some meat which politely refused by me. The ajussi later told her wife that he know that I can't eat pork and any non halal meat because I'm a Muslim. He also helped me to explain to them that I don't drink any alcohol and with his gesture I know that he's telling them about my head scarf. He have been to Singapore and Johor and this explain his knowledge about Islam.

MISO Perfomance

28 April 2015

I was given two free tickets worth 50,000KRW by Korea Tourism Organization Malaysia (KTO) before coming to Seoul. Which is the price is almost RM180 and I would never imagine myself spending this much for a performance!

Here's the tip. Always keep yourself updated with offers and discounts at the KTO website. This is one of the best way to have a great time in Korea.

Miso

Miso is a Korean word means beautiful smile. It is a musical show that give us a peek look on the traditional performance with a bit touch of modern art performance.

The performance that I went to is MISO: Baebijang-jeonIt is a satirical novel representative of the Joseon era. It was written by an unknown writer during the Joseon dynasty which evokes laughter by alluding to the hypocrisy of the ruling class and human desires.

It provide an interesting story of a noble man that always hiding his true self that longing for another women. When the noble man need to transfer to Jeju Island, he promised his wife to never cheated on her. However due to the jealousy of the other nobles in the island, they tricked him to fall in love with one of the most famous Giseng on the island.

Not Suitable for Kids

For me it is an interesting performance with all the great dances and story line. However, personally I think the jokes is not suitable for kids. They have a lot of R-rated actions which can only be understand by adults. I don't think that children will enjoy this performance that much.

In addition to this my suggestion is to go to the performance as couple. Go earlier, then have lunch or dinner together at the nearest cafe and walk yourself to the theater. Because its near to the Changdeokgung palace, the road provide you great ambiance which and added value for your date. You can choose to go at 4pm or 8pm, they provide two sessions of the performance. My advice is to book your ticket in advance to get a good seat and book online to get 10% discount.

Another tip is for you to went straight out of the theater as early as you can to catch a photo session with the performer. If you're a photo freak that can't be satisfied without a proven photo going to the performance. Well, the performer wore great costumes which is some of it quite rare compared to the normal hanbuk because they were acting as giseang. I think it's a good catch. I'm suggesting this because I was late for the photo session since I went straight to the bathroom instead of the photo session. It was based on personal priorities.

Information

Name: MISO:Baebijang-jeon
Time: Open Run 4pm/8pm (Closed on Monday)/ 80 minutes
Ticket: VIP seat: 60,000 won/ R seat: 50,000won/ S seat 40,000 won
Inquiries: +82-2-751-1500
Location: Jeongdong Theater (Seoul)

From my observation, the nearest subway is the City hall exit 12. I was lost during this time because I walk from the nearest place and it is quite confusing to go to the theater. Therefore, my suggestion is for you to go straight to the City Hall Subway station to avoid being lost and frustrating your date.

Musim Bunga di Sekitar Dongdaemun City Wall Park

Hari Ketiga

Seoul City Wall Museum
